California Public Library Chooses LEID Products Electronic Locker System
for New State-of-the-Art Easy Access Library
Using LEID Products Electronic Lockers, the Springtown Branch of Livermore Public Library Expands Service Hours from One Day to Seven Days a Week to Meet Patron Needs
Auburn Hills, MI – May 15, 2013 – LEID Products, LLC., innovators of secure electronic storage systems with built-in asset management and inventory control software, today announced Livermore Public Library in California is using LEID’s Access.it electronic lockers as part of their new revolutionary self-service library called the ‘Easy Access Library.’ The Easy Access Library, introduced to patrons on April 27th, extends library access to seven days a week. The new program has been created to combat the limitations resulting from significant budget cuts the Livermore Public Library has experienced over the past six years, including the reduction of hours at the Springtown Branch to one day a week for staffed library service.
LEID’s Access.it electronic lockers were installed to provide self-service library ‘holds’ pickup. Prior to the introduction of the Easy Access Library, The Springtown Branch Library was only open and staffed on Tuesdays from noon until 8 pm. In addition to the full service library hours, the new Easy Access Library provides access to library materials seven days a week through secure key card access. Patrons can place items on hold through the Library’s online catalog and have them delivered to the ‘Easy Access Lockers’ to pick up at their convenience.
The Easy Access Library also offers secured video lending and the ability to check out children and adult books and magazines. Library patrons can purchase, for a nominal fee, an “Easy Access” card that will work on the card reader installed on the main door of the Library. A secure gate closes off the main part of the branch, leaving only the Easy Access portion available, similar to how the Post Office operates when closed. An extensive security system, with numerous video cameras and panic buttons, is in place to insure patron safety.
To provide instruction in the use of the state of the art equipment at this revolutionary self-service library, an open house was held on April 27th and another is being planned. “The Livermore Public Library is pleased to offer patrons the self-serve Easy Access Library to expanded hold pickup service through the use of the LEID hold lockers,” commented Interim Director of Library Services, Tamera LeBeau. “Patrons who are using the service have been very pleased with the opportunity to pick up holds at their convenience rather than having to work their schedule around the limited hours that the library is staffed. The LEID hold lockers have been easy for both staff and patrons to use and we expect their popularity to continue to grow as news of this new service spreads.”

It is with deep sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the death of one of our colleagues, Skip Richardson, on April 25, 2013. Skip was a visionary, mentor, and great contributor to our team at LEID Products. Skip will be greatly missed by LEID’s team not only for his professional contributions, but also, for his commitment, great friendship, zest for life and his giving spirit.
It was clear to all of us at LEID that Skip cherished his family. On June 22nd of last year he celebrated his 38th wedding anniversary with his wife Kathleen. He emailed our team that day to share how happy he was to have Kathleen – he even included a wedding picture as shown. In addition to being a loving husband to his wife, Kathleen, he was the proud father to two sons, Blake and Brent.

A memorial service will be held for Skip on Friday, May 17th at Second Baptist Church, 6400 Woodway, Houston TX 77057 at 1:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to the following Charity where Skip served in their mission - helping men in the rebuilding of their lives.

The Illinois Association of Property and Evidence Managers (IAPEM) seeks to promote education and professionalism among evidence management professionals in the State of Illinois. The event is taking place at the Wyndham Lisle-Chicago Hotel from April 17-19, 2013. The BACS Evidence Management System revolutionizes the way that police departments store and track evidence to ensure seamless chain of custody. Officers can drop off and pick up evidence without having to track down the evidence officer. This saves time, resources and the potential that improper handling could negatively affect a court case where that evidence is required to come to a decision. BACS software provides reports by property number, case number, officer and date resulting in solid chain of custody reports. An issue more prevalent and terrifying than ever, campus safety has filled the nation with questions, concerns, and an urge to improve security measures. Schools across the nation and around the globe are escalating efforts to ensure staff and community readiness to handle critical situations that put students and staff in danger. A very well-known and respected publication, Campus Safety, recently published an article on the Top Campus Security Trends to Watch in 2013. Written by its Executive Editor, Robin Hattersley Gray, the piece is timely and chock-full of knowledge and tips for an increase in campus safety in the coming year. Gray presents the need for technology that supports campus protection. “Access control, training and weapons, as well as the management of keys, guests and emergency power, are some of the top issues that should be on your radar this year,” Gray states.
Gray identifies eight trends for the year; one being the need for a secure and accountable way to track campus keys. Too often, keys that access classrooms, offices and community areas have no formal tracking system and either go missing or fall into the wrong hands. Gray wisely advises readers that technology to manage key access is an excellent way for campuses to “do a better job of tracking who enters their buildings.” Moreover, many universities are implementing these same technologies to control access to and track the weapons used by their campus police departments.
LEID Products offers college and university police departments the ability to combine key and weapon access control with a self-service system – the BACS Asset Management System. Electronic gun racks, lockers and keybox are sealed; controlled electronically through the BACS ID Station Kiosk. When an officer arrives for duty, all they need to do is log into the BACS Kiosk via fingerprint verification. The kiosk prompts users to select any weapons and/or keys needed for their shift. Officers will only be granted access to equipment they have been qualified to use by the administrator. For example, if an officer is not taser certified, a taser would not appear on the access list when that officer logs in. Every piece of equipment controlled by the system contains an RFID chip, guaranteeing accurate identification.
An identical process exists for officers to return equipment after their shift. The BACS ID Station Kiosk lists all equipment checked out by each officer when they log in to the system. The officer is able to scan each asset with the kiosk RFID reader to accurately identify the item. The kiosk electronically unlocks the item’s storage compartment for easy return. Beyond proper tracking, the kiosk traces every transaction for easy viewing by department administrators in real time. The administrator can log into the system – through remote web enabled access – to see where each piece of equipment is at any given time, both from on and off campus.
This high level of accountability ensures police department weapons will not go missing or fall into the wrong hands. In the event of a campus emergency, administrators can choose to override the system, releasing all assets for immediate access. LEID’s newest offering brings readiness to an even higher level with the availability of individual multi-unit concealed weapon lockers – that can be placed strategically across the campus for police access to additional firearms in the event of an emergency.
When it comes to protecting our youth, it is comforting to know that many of our school police departments are stepping up their preparation efforts to be trained to handle any and all potential public safety undertakings. BACS secures, tracks (via RFID) and provides full accountability for items stored. Items are marked with an RFID chip linked to the BACS kiosk. The user logs into the BACS application to access items by placing their finger on the biometric reader for verification. Then the user selects the authorized items listed on the touch screen which is then retrieved from a secure electronic locker. National Institute of Health Expanding use of LEID Products BACS Asset Management System
Expansion of Secure Armory Storage Furthers NIH Ability to Properly Track and Maintain Department Weapons and Assets

The system currently supports all NIH police officers responsible for protecting the U.S. medical research agency.
NIH uses the LEID BACS Asset Management System – which securely stores and tracks weapons and valuable equipment – to assure full accountability for weapons in their police department. Before introducing the BACS system to their department, officers kept manual logs of equipment. Although employees meticulously documented asset whereabouts and maintenance records, government audit records did not always match up correctly. After using the BACS System, NIH’s process for issuing equipment is efficient and accountable.
