Lockers contribute to increase in library circulation

March 16, 2010

The Barrington Area Library has seen circulation numbers increase thanks in part to electronic lockers placed in four locations across the 72-square-mile library district.

For the first time, library officials expect to have more than 1 million items checked out within a fiscal year when the time period ends June 30, said library circulation department head Marie Thomas.

30% Increase in Circulation

Barrington Area Library in Barrington, Illinois covers a 72-square-mile area, making it Illinois’ largest library district serving more than 40,000 residents.  In the late 1990s, the library system’s staff found and installed remote book drops and lockers to better service residents living distances from their library.

Over the years, the locker vendor discontinued manufacturing the products.  After connecting with LEID Products, Marie Thomas, head of circulation for the Barrington Area Library, Barrington, Illinois, had the system installed at its newest branch located at South Barrington Club – a full tennis and recreational facility.  “We were able to expand our established service to include the S. Barrington Club by adding LEID’s fast and easy-to-use electronic locker system,” says Thomas.

Thomas is satisfied with the newest electronic locker system.  She has seen major changes that include:

·        an increase in traffic – in the initial weeks after the lockers were installed, 28 out of the 40 new units were being utilized,

·        circulation is up 30 percent from last year,

·        with business increasing and the lockers needing minimal management, Thomas stretched her budget dollars and has a less congested circulation desk,

·        and increased partnerships within her community
