iLibrary System provides self-service branch, resulting in increased circulation and library card holders.

Silver Grove & Melbourne, KY – February 5, 2018LEID Products, LLC, the leader of electronic locker and cabinet storage with biometric asset protection and control, today announced its iLibrary system is proving successful for patrons in Campbell County, Kentucky.  Two Library Express locations were installed in Silver Grove, KY and Melbourne, KY in May 2017.

Silver Grove Express was installed at the Silver Grove Fire Station.  Melbourne Express is at St. Philip Catholic School.  Each location has a set of lockers and a book return under an awning.  Library staff delivers requested materials to the lockers Monday, Wednesday and Friday.  Patrons can request materials through the website, the CCPL app, or by calling one of the branches.  Patrons can access the locker containing their items using their library card number on the key pad at any time, day or night.LEID-Products-KY-Library-Express

The systems have been received with a lot of enthusiasm from the community.  Combined, the Library Express locations are seeing an average monthly circulation of about 400 items.  As expected, the St. Philip School students and teachers are taking advantage of the location attached to their building.  In addition, drivers from a nearby drywall company have been reserving audio books for long days of driving.  “Some people have learned the schedule and are meeting the van before it stocks the lockers,” said JC Morgan, Library Director for the Campbell County Public Library.  “Over 100 people from the community have signed up for library cards since the installation,” and the increase in cardholders has been attributed to the enhanced convenience of the system.

Both locations are situated on Kentucky Highway 8 along the Ohio River.  Because they are both in the Ohio River flood plain, there’s a barrier to growth which makes it difficult to build a new library branch in the area.  The closest library branch for those two communities is about 5 miles away, with traffic concerns.  The communities have about 1,000 residents; the county has about 90,000.

The majority of the funding was provided by a generous donor who grew up in the area.  Each location agreed to cover the cost of the electricity, which is about the same as running a hairdryer.

“It’s a low-cost solution to serve a somewhat isolated area,” said Morgan.  “The product is very simple for the staff to learn. Operationally, we’ve seen minimal increase in cost.”
