“Our library’s focus is to provide the best service to all of Grant County’s (KY) population. The installation of the LEID Products’ cabinets has provided a 24/7 access point to grow our services and reach an underserved population.”
Susan Nimersheim, Director, Grant County (KY) Public Library
Susan Nimersheim, director, Grant County Public Library in Williamstown, Kentucky oversees a library that primarily serves a rural population and is situated between Cincinnati and Lexington where many county residents commute to work. While many people in Grant County are accustomed to driving longer distances for shopping and other services, the library staff felt that a service enhancement was needed to better serve county residents, especially those living on the county’s perimeter and furthest from the centrally-located library building. At one time, the library used a bookmobile to reach all sections of the county, but this service hadn’t been in place for many years and an additional library building was not an option.
The Grant County Public Library staff needed an alternative method to provide easy and convenient service to their county’s patrons. Nimersheim discovered a cost-saving steel cabinet made by LEID Products that was installed at another Kentucky library system… those cabinets and their technology’s ability to provide remote, unattended access sparked her interest. Nimersheim committed herself to obtaining the products and then began applying for grants. In 2008, she received grants through the Library Service Technology Act (LSTA), Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) and the Kentucky Department of Libraries & Archives (KDLA) to purchase two LEID Products’ electronic modular access cabinets. The community also reached out by donating their time and services to help install the cabinets. In early 2009, the Grant County Public Library installed the cabinets, now named the Library Express, at their local Grant County Deposit Bank branches in Corinth and Crittenden, KY. They have been operating successfully since May 2009.
Grant County Public Library found that the LEID Products’ innovative electronic modular access cabinets support the current mission of the library to increase circulation, as well as give flexibility in dealing with the most demanding patrons. In addition, the cabinets and their technology help reduce operational costs.
